Aivolution has expertise developing Linear Referencing Systems using LRS technologies and tools from leading vendors as well as open-source technology stacks. We can assist you in designing and implementing a linear referencing system that accommodates all your collection techniques.
For the California Department of Transportation, we have served as the primary technology partner enhancing the GIS tools used to maintain the Caltrans Postmile based LRS. We have equally developed a high throughput web-service making the LRS accessible to the entire enterprise. For an enterprise which is in the business of managing assets, projects and incidents on an inherently spatial structure, this web-service is a cornerstone technology, providing for integration opportunities between disparate systems.
Spatial Linear Referencing Systems (LRS) are specialized Geospatial Information Systems used to manage data related to linear features like roads, railways, rivers, oil and gas transmission pipelines and power and data transmission lines. In a Linear Referencing System, the location of attributes, features and events are specified by a single parameter rather than Cartographic (Latitude,Longitude) or Cartesian (x,y) coordinates. This single parameter represents the location of attributes as the distance from an origin on a specified linear feature.
The most obvious benefit is that using a single parameter or identifier to designate location on a network is more human friendly. It is easier to send an engineer to Mile 1 on Route 1, than it is to send an engineer to (fill in Hixon Circle latitude / longitude).
From an IT perspective, Linear Referencing Systems provide Enterprise Application Integration opportunities. By using unique identifiers that incorporate a linear measure on a linear feature, location information in otherwise disparate databases can be correlated by location, without having to resort to GIS operations.
